I think I have found termites, what should I do now?
Please – Don’t Touch It!! Please do not use fly spray or any other agent. Try to leave it as untouched as possible. This is because disturbance can drive them away from the area for anywhere up to a couple of months. The more termites we can treat initially the better the results. see below
Termite Treatment
The first thing to do is a Termite Inspection. This can possibly help find additional termites / damage in the house, and maybe find the entry point. And also identify the termite species which is an important role in treatment.
Next on the list is to treat what is found and there are different ways to do this in a home: Chemical Foaming, Dry-dusting or Baiting. The individual situation is what can help determine the best way to treat the termites. Such as the species, The location, the extent of damage etc. This is an on the job assessment as it all based on each individual specific needs.
Further recommendations will be made to assist in protecting your home for the future.
It is important to note the difference between a treatment and a protection process. The treatment is for the remedial action to eradicate termites but this does not guard the home for future infestation. This is always discussed with the treatment.
Timber Pest, Termite & Borer Inspections
Our inspections are always carried out according to the Australia Standards.
The Standards state in all inspections a Visual Termite Inspection AS3660 must be carried out.
An in-depth inspection can take several hours. A full written and detailed report is within the guidelines set out by these Australian Standards and must be provided in all termite inspections. This report includes findings and recommendations.
A report is specific to each homeowner and we will include photos were possible to help assist in the explanations of complex or treatment concerns. Great communication is the key to understanding your property and report!
What makes us different or unique with our inspections?
We use an array of methods to aid in a more thorough inspection outlined below using a combination of the original (visual) and new technologies to inspect your home for no extra or hidden costs, along with over 18 years of experience.
*= A required tool under the Australian Standards AS3660 and must be used in all Visual Termite Inspections.
The ‘(optional, additional tool if required)’ is how we make our inspection that little bit more thorough in providing the homeowner a bit more security. Please note an inspection is not a guarantee to rid your home of termites. No inspection is. However it is recommended you have an inspection at least annually by us, CSIRO, QBCC & set out in the Australian Standards for a number of reasons
- It is the safest measure to find out if you have termites before they do too much damage.
- It is recommended even if you have termite protection systems in place
- Your existing system may be compromised by new gardens or plumbing work etc which will be outlined what to look for in our detailed report finding.
- Some systems make it easier to detect termites but won’t stop them getting in and failure to maintain these systems or annual inspection recommendations could result in your warranties being void.
According to the Australian Standards it is not outlined who has to provide the inspection as long as they are fully termite licenced and accredited for the particular product or treatment that was used.
Whats in my report:
It will outline if evidence of termite activity and/or termite workings or damage where found.
Possible environmental conditions that are conducive to termite activity/attack and include any recommendations for a suitable plan if required. Photos are also included. We are able to provide printed and/or emailed copies.
Pre Purchase Inspections
Pre Purchase Inspections are similar, but different to a Termite Visual inspection. As outlined above it includes everything the Visual Inspection does. They are more comprehensive though as they go into more depth with regards to timber pests by including borer, decay and conducive conditions. The reports are generally longer and given their nature tend to take longer than the Termite Inspection. We like to allow up to 3 hours to complete the inspection onsite. We usually work closely with a Building Inspector, as 4 eyes are better than 2, and a Building Inspector works to a different Australian Standard then we do.

Termite protection
Termite Protection is very individual. There are 2 main types of protection for an existing home: Chemical and Monitoring & Baiting.
Chemical Protection is a long-term investment. There are products that are 1) repellent and 2) non-repellent.
Repellent Products do just that – repel termites from the areas treated. They are an older technology that has been used for over 20 years. Products of this nature have an approximate lifespan of at least 10 years (South of the Tropic of Capricorn) under concrete in ideal soil situations. Termites will attempt to avoid the treated areas and potentially seek areas where treatment may have been compromised to gain entry to a house.
Non-Repellent Products obviously do not repel termites, but instead allow them through the treated soil which can begin to kill them. The termites are unaware they have come in contact with the product and can pass it on to the termites it comes in contact with. Non-repellent products have a better chance of eliminating colonies of termites and reducing the risk for the house in the future.
Monitoring & Baiting Systems – are installed around the perimeter of the building. There is usually one station every 3 meters around the base of the house. The stations are inspected every 6 weeks and are replaced when needed and maintained.
